Cherokee
County is a wonderful place to visit and enjoy our scenic views and the
mountain experience. Visit seven different sites listed on the National Register of Historic
Places and bring the kids. First is the all marble Cherokee County
courthouse, and the famous Harshaw Chapel and
Cemetery. The John C. Campbell Folk
School, located in Brasstown, North
Carolina was founded in the mid 1920s.
The school offers many opportunities for studies of crafts, music and
dance, blacksmithing, woodcarving, and art. Check out the school
for something special for yourself!
If you are up for a little water action, Cherokee County has three great public lakes. Hiawassee lake has 163 miles of shoreline. Bring the boat and fishing equipment. Visit the highest overspill dam in the world at 307 feet. Check out Appalachia Lake and experience the great outdoors. Cherokee Lake is a little smaller and offers easy access for everyone to fishing and the fishing pier. Get back to nature at Nantahala National Forest offers horseback riding, nature trails and recreational activities for the entire family. Bring comfortable shoes! The area is filled with local culture and events like the Wagon Train and the Jeep Jamboree. The historic Wagon Train was started in the 1950's with 67 wagons and 325 riders who were working to improve the area roads. Today the tradition continues every Fourth of July as riders relive the event. If you have a Jeep, you may be aware of the The Jeep Jamboree which is scheduled twice a year, in March and October. Bring your Jeep to Murphy and take a ride on some of the best jeep trails in the area. Vacation
time must include shopping in the local area!
A visit to Cherokee County should include a visit to our four huge flea markets.
These are year-round markets, so plan to enjoy them anytime you are in
the area.
